VIDEOTAPES
2006-2016

Motion pictures from a decade of furtive, manqué attempts at chasing a childhood dream. I was largely sidetracked by fear, self-doubt and life at large, but remain very proud of them and their foundational role in what I do today.

How to Disappear in Gatwick (2006)

Seven-hour wait for a flight home for the holidays, armed with my first MiniDV camcorder. The synchronicity and serendipity of that night’s shoot still tingles — and hooked me for life.

The End of Europe (2006)

Melancholic meandering around the most Western points of Europe with my bestie, Manuel.

How’s it Goin’, Joshua Owen? (2007)

A breathtaking week in Cornwall with the titular native.

Unjustified Paranoia (2007)

A new camera needed to be tested. Made this with my brother, Nicholas.

London Shibboleth I & II (2008)

I moved to London in January 2008. Many people I knew relished living there. I felt like I had no choice to be there. “Shibboleth” was the name of Doris Salcedo’s exhibition in the Tate Modern; a Hebrew word from the Old Testament used to detect foreigners — before slaughtering them. Starring Benjamin Stanley and my first flat in London.

doesn’t mean it’s there (2009)

Music video making in the freezing cold of Highgate, London with housemate Benjamin Stanley.

Music video: “Um Plágio de Mim” (2009)

Shot by me with one camera on the hottest day of the year at Teatro Ibérico in Xabregas, Lisboa. Edited by me in London. Was aired extensively on MTV Portugal and MTV Europe.

magnets (2010)

I worked with the novelist and writer Greg Stekelman (aka TheManWhoFellAsleep) on this short. Greg wrote the script, we recorded the voiceover in my flat, and then spent an afternoon in Alexandra Park filming.

Pulse of Pride (2016)

On the 18th of June 2016, I attended the 17th annual LGBT Pride March in Lisboa, just six days after after the Pulse nightclub killings in Orlando, Florida shocked the world. It felt more important than ever to be present, to be visible, and to capture and share that.
